SQL Copy-Only Backup
When backing up an SQL database, the 'Copy-Only Backup' option can quite easily be overlooked, however if you have an existing database backup plan which performs incremental or differential database backups, it is essential that the 'Copy-Only' option is checked if (and only if) you are making an individual backup outside of this plan.
The consequences of not doing so is that the database will be marked as having performed a full backup, and therefore when the next differential or incremental backup occurs it will only backup the rows since this individual backup, and not all records since the last full backup within the plan. The result is that it will invalidate the current and future differential/incremental backup sets until the next scheduled full backup.
If you have done this by accident, all is not lost; you can keep the full individual backup as part of your backup sets, which will be needed if a restore is required. But of course it is best to not do individual backups without checking the Copy-Only backup option.
T-SQL Example
BACKUP DATABASE [database_name] TO DISK = [file_path + fileName.bak] WITH COPY_ONLY;
Enterprise Manager
Right click on your database and select: Tasks -> Back up...
Under 'Backup Type', check 'Copy-only Backup'

• Is anybody using spreadsheets to record and report on regular activities?
• Spending a lot of time updating the data in a standard report on a periodic basis?
See why they shouldn't be doing that…..
